US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo emphasized that the goal of the sanctions against Turkey is to prevent Russia from gaining influence and not undermine Ankara’s military capabilities, considering that the acquisition of the S-400 system allows Russia to gain access. to the Turkish defense industries.
The US State Department said in a statement Thursday that Secretary Pompeo discussed this week with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu the issue of sanctions against Ankara after he bought Russia’s S-400 air defense system.
The State Department said Pompeo made clear to his Turkish counterpart that Ankara’s acquisition of that system threatens the safety of US military personnel and technology and allows Russia to snoop into the Turkish military and its defense industry.
Pompeo told Davisoglu that the goal of the sanctions against Turkey is to prevent Russia from earning financial income or influencing a NATO member state, according to the statement.
Pompeo called on Turkey to resolve the missile system purchase crisis in a manner consistent with the defense and military cooperation contracts signed between Washington and Ankara.
This came after Turkey’s foreign minister announced in press releases that Ankara would not back down on the purchase of the Russian air defense system and would take action to respond after assessing US sanctions.
Cavusoglu also considered that the sanctions decision was legally and politically incorrect, and that it represented a violation of Turkish sovereignty.
