Geneva: The World Health Organization confirmed on Monday that the new strain of the emerging corona virus that appeared in the United Kingdom “is not out of control”, calling for the application of health measures that have proven their effectiveness.
“We have recorded a virus reproduction rate that far exceeds the threshold of 1.5 at different stages of this epidemic, and we were able to control it. Consequently, the current situation in this regard is not out of control,” said the official of WHO health emergency cases, Michael Ryan, at a press conference.
These statements are a response to what was announced this Sunday by the British Health Minister, Matt Hancock, who considered that “the new strain is out of control.”
Ryan added: “Although the virus has become somewhat more effective in terms of spreading, it can be stopped”, emphasizing that “the measures currently in place are in place. We must continue to do what we have done” until now.
“We may have to do it a little more intensively and for a longer time to make sure we can control this virus,” he added.
Since Sunday, several countries have closed their borders to arrivals from the UK and South Africa, where the new strain of Covid-19 appeared.
