The most polluted areas are witnessing a further spread of the “Crown” … We will wear masks even in the bedrooms!

Habib Maalouf wrote in “Al-Akhbar”: If the relationship between high levels of pollution in the air and the speed of spread of the Corona epidemic is proven, as confirmed by scientific studies, this means that all closure procedures and spacing are useless, and that the masks should accompany us even in bedrooms.

More than a year after the spread of the “Corona” epidemic, the “close” – and therefore dangerous “- relationship between the virus and air pollution is developing for researchers around the world, day after day. And the “focal point” of their encounter, for the most part, is the lungs. Both the virus and the contamination cause the same fatal health problems in almost the same location. Keep in mind that since long before the “birth” of the viruses, chest disease specialists have always emphasized that air pollution makes influenza and other lung diseases more serious and dangerous.

Perhaps the most logical explanation for the rapid spread of the virus is its transmission through polluted air. This is indicated by the fact that the places with the greatest spread of “Corona” are the most polluted areas. This is also confirmed by a new study conducted by the prestigious American Harvard University, which included 3,080 American provinces. It showed that an increase in the level of airborne fine particles increases the risk of death among Corona patients by 11%. The study, which was recently published in the scientific journal “Science Advances”, compared the mortality data from viruses at the level of each region with the daily concentrations of fine particles suspended in the air in these provinces between 2000 and 2006, and concluded that the slight increase in contamination (only one microgram per meter) Cubic), was associated with an 11% increase in the death rate from viruses. Perhaps this explains the fact that the highest percentage of positive test results in Lebanon occurred in the most densely populated cities and regions, which have the highest levels of air pollution in the Lebanese territories.
The studies don’t stop at the danger of the most polluted places in your air, but go further. Pollution mainly attacks the respiratory system. However, constant exposure to pollutants causes chronic inflammation of the airways and lungs, which weakens their ability to fight any virus. More than that, the virus has a greater ability to spread with the presence of fine particles suspended in polluted air. The droplets that carry the virus can stay in the air longer and spread farther when they stick to these particles.

No one can yet say with certainty what the relationship is between traditional pollution problems and epidemics, nor in terms of their beginning, severity or end. None of the experts have yet confirmed that air pollution has an effect in itself on the “birth” of epidemics, their spread or their end. But it can be said, after these studies, and also before them, that reducing air pollution rates by adopting new policies based on energy saving and relying on renewable energies and environmentally friendly means of transport, all this It reduces air pollution and reduces death rates, either by air or by epidemic. Or both.

During closures that took place in cities around the world this year to deal with the spread of the epidemic, there was a significant decrease in the levels of fine particles suspended in the air, before they returned to their “normal” levels one after closing is completed. This led many environmental enthusiasts around the world to claim that what must be done to save the climate is to live in a similar way to what we live during home quarantine due to the epidemic. That could be utopian. However, it is not far from realism, it is time to really think about rethinking the transport and energy policies that are the most productive in terms of air pollution, diseases and epidemics.

As for the old – new question, which has recently come to the fore about the mutation and mutation of the virus, and its adoption in new and disguised forms, it questions the suitability of vaccines that are close to being announced. What increases these doubts is the return of the discussion also on the relationship of this epidemic with wild species, especially animals, and its transformation after its transmission to it and its return to humans.
