Lebanese President Michel Aoun meets with the country’s Supreme Defense Council to discuss the Beirut port fire

Lebanese President Michel Aoun stressed that the fire that occurred in the port of Beirut on Thursday could be an intentional act of sabotage or the result of technical error, ignorance or negligence.

Aoun said during the Lebanese Supreme Defense Council meeting: “The reason must be known as soon as possible, and the captives must be held accountable.”

He added: “It is no longer acceptable for mistakes of any kind leading to such a fire, especially after the disaster caused by the first fire.”

For his part, Acting Prime Minister Hassan Diab emphasized the need to accelerate the investigation and define responsibilities, stressing “the importance of having clear answers to people’s questions.”

Lebanese President Michel Aoun summoned the Supreme Defense Council to meet today to discuss the causes of the Beirut port fire.

He highlighted the need to form a committee headed by the Minister of Works, which includes representatives of the security services and the port company, to develop a new organization for work in the port and guarantee citizen security there.

For his part, the head of the Lebanese Parliamentary Works Commission, deputy Nazih Najm, indicated that “according to reports received from the emergency room, the fire that broke out today in the port of Beirut is due to a technical error by a worker.”

A fire broke out in the port of Beirut on Thursday morning, sending a huge column of black smoke into the sky over the Lebanese capital, just over a month after a massive explosion destroyed the port facilities and their surroundings.
