North Korean state media reported that leader Kim Jong Un started the new year with a handwritten letter to his compatriots visiting the mausoleums of his father and grandfather.

“I sincerely wish all the families of the country more happiness and good health. Also in the new year, I will work hard to achieve a new early era in which the ideals and wishes of our people are fulfilled,” Kim said in the message broadcast by North Korea’s Central News Agency.

He added: “I thank the people for their enduring trust in our party and their support even in difficult times. I promise once again that I will always be loyal to great people.”

The message that the North Korean leader addressed to his people

This is the first time that Kim has sent such a message since taking office following the death of his father, the late leader Kim Jong-il in late 2011. It is the first time that a North Korean leader has sent his greetings to his town on New Years Day since 1995.

The Korean leader also paid tribute to the Kumsusan Sun Palace, where on New Year’s Day the body of his father Kim Jong-il and grandfather of the state’s founder, Kim Il-sung, was buried.

He has visited the sanctuary every year on January 1 since taking office, except in 2018. He was accompanied by senior officials and a group of delegates who will participate in the conference scheduled to unveil the new economic development plan and the new policy on United States and South Korea.

North Korea has not yet set a date for the conference, but observers say it will take place in the next few days, as state media reported that delegates who participated in the conference had met in Pyongyang.
