The International Olympic Committee expressed its “shock” after hearing the news that the Iranian authorities had implemented – today Saturday – the death sentence against the fighter Naveed Afkari, despite international protests against the ruling in recent days.

Qassem Mousavi, head of the legal authorities in Fars, said – in statements to official television in Iran – that the death sentence was carried out against Afkari (27 years old) in the “Adel Abad” prison in the city of Shiraz, in southern Iran.

Iranian legal authorities ruled that Afafari killed a security officer during a demonstration in Shiraz in 2018.

My thoughts reportedly confessed to the crime, but the fighter himself, his family, and human rights organizations announced that the confession was under the influence of torture.

The International Olympic Committee said, in a statement, that “the execution of the fighter Naveed my thoughts in Iran was very sad news. The International Olympic Committee is shocked by what was announced today.”

The president of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, had made personal calls in letters to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani in recent days, asking for clemency for my thoughts.

“It is extremely disturbing that our goal has not been achieved despite calls from athletes around the world and all the work that has been done behind the scenes by the International Olympic Committee, as well as the Iranian Olympic Committee, the World Federation of Wrestling and the Iranian Wrestling Federation, “said the International Olympic Committee.

The Olympic Committee offered its condolences to Afkari’s family and friends.

However, the Iranian judicial authorities rejected criticism from national and international organizations. The spokesman for the Iranian judiciary, Ghulam Hossein Ismaeli, said – last Wednesday – “Many are talking about cases about which they do not have accurate information, and do not have the legal capacity to do so.”
