After the meeting, Adeeb said: “He discussed with President Aoun the difficulties we face in forming a government, and I know we do not have the luxury of time and I count on everyone’s cooperation.”
The president-designate, who did not bring a government formation to Baabda, added: “We agreed with the president of the republic to wait a bit to allow more time for the ongoing consultations to form the government.”
Sources familiar with the Aoun-Adib meeting told Asharq Al-Awsat that “the latter intended to apologize, but Paris came on the line at the decisive moment and asked him to wait for further contacts. In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic said that President Aoun presented with the designated prime minister the results of the ongoing contacts and consultations to form the next government, and the ways to overcome the difficulties that have arisen in the recent period, maintaining the objective of accelerating the new government so that it sees the light as soon as possible.

During the meeting, President Aoun asked Adeeb, according to the statement, to continue the ongoing contacts to discuss the government file because current conditions in the country require rapid rescue work, especially since 16 days have passed since the assignment and Lebanon is waiting for an understanding to form a new government, noting that Aoun confirmed “Adherence to the French initiative in all its components, which had the approval of the Lebanese political leaderships.”
Prior to his meeting with Aoun, Adeeb had expressed his refusal to deviate from the understanding that the formation of an apolitical mini-government requires, and his sources quoted him as saying that “the task I was assigned to as a result of the understanding of the majority of the Lebanese political forces, is to form a government of non-political specialists, in a record period. ” And on this basis, the objective was neither the monopoly of opinion nor the targeting of any of the Lebanese political components, but the selection of a governmental formation of specialists. Any other proposal will later impose a different approach to the new government, and this does not correspond to the mission for which it was assigned.
Sources quoted Adeeb as saying: “Because I am interested in keeping the mission that I am fulfilling in line with the spirit of the basic understanding on the specialist government, I asked President Michel Aoun to postpone the meeting between us until this afternoon, for more contacts before determining final position. “
The consultations continued until the last moment, before the Aoun-Adeeb meeting, with no positive results. Sources close to the Shiite duo told Asharq Al-Awsat that the meeting that brought Adeeb together with Khalilin, the political aide to (Hezbollah) Secretary General Hussein Khalil, and former minister and deputy Ali Hassan Khalil, prior to his meeting with President Michel Aoun did not pay off with the Shiite duo’s refusal to leave the Finance Ministry and the demand to appoint their ministers.
