Skirmishes between the Armenian and Azerbaijani armies in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, in the clearest violation of the ceasefire agreement signed between the two countries.
Azerbaijan announced today, Sunday, that 4 of its soldiers were killed in clashes with Armenian forces in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, despite the ceasefire in force since November, while Armenia also accused Baku of launching attacks.
In a statement, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said that “the Armenian armed groups refused to leave the forested areas in the northwestern province of Hadrut, in contradiction to the ceasefire agreement, and carried out terrorist provocations”, as said.
Baku confirmed that in two separate incidents, on November 26 and December 8, 4 of its soldiers were killed and 3 injured.
On Sunday, Armenia confirmed that 6 of its soldiers were wounded in Nagorno Karabakh, on Saturday, after violating the ceasefire.
The Armenian Defense Ministry accused Baku of launching an attack on two villages with “armored vehicles” and “heavy artillery”. She said, “After those battles, which lasted for hours, the enemy managed to storm Khin Takhir village and approached Khtsabird village.”
These two villages are located in the Hadrot district, adjacent to the new dividing line that separates the south of the region, the two camps since the conclusion of the ceasefire agreement.
On Saturday, the Azerbaijani army denied any attack. He said he had been responding to Armenian “provocations” and had taken “appropriate response measures”.
For its part, the Russian army, which is deploying a peacekeeping force to ensure compliance with the agreement, confirmed that it had registered a “breach of the ceasefire agreement” on December 11, without naming the person responsible for it.
This is Moscow’s first confirmed breach of the agreement since it entered into force a month ago. Yerevan announced that these incidents were raised during a meeting in Moscow between the Armenian and Russian defense ministers.
During a meeting on Saturday in Baku with the French and American leaders of the “Minsk” group, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev expressed “concern” about the announcement of new battles, but promised to attack the Armenian forces “with iron hand “if violence resumes.
During his visit to Azerbaijan this week, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that the “battle” against Armenia was not over yet.
