Washington- There are no bodies of water on the surface of the moon like those that characterize the planet, but scientists said today, Monday, that the water on the moon is more dispersed than previously thought.
Water particles are trapped within mineral grains on the surface, with the possibility of more being in patches of ice in permanently shaded areas that cannot be reached by sunlight.
The team of scientists talked about the first unequivocal discovery of water molecules on the moon’s surface. Meanwhile, another team reports that there are almost 40,000 square kilometers of permanent shadows that can contain pockets of water in the form of ice.
Water is a precious natural resource, and its abundant presence on the moon can become very important for future missions by astronauts or robots, as water will be extracted and used for the purpose of ensuring life on the moon’s surface and using it. to drink or produce fuel.
The team led by Casey Honeybull of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland discovered water particles on the moon’s surface trapped in grains of debris or mineral fragments called natural glass because of the similarities between them and glass.
“A lot of people think my discovery is ice water,” Honeybull said. this is not true. They are just water molecules. And because of their dispersion over a large area, they don’t interact with each other to form ice water or even liquid water.
