“Since last October, the Lebanese people have taken to the streets to demand economic and institutional reforms, better governance and an end to the rampant corruption that has stifled Lebanon’s enormous potential,” the spokesman said.
He noted that “the father’s devastating fourth explosion led to a doubling of calls from the Lebanese people and the international community for government reform, transparency and economic stability. These calls were not heeded.”
And the spokesman for the US State Department concluded by saying: “As we and the international support group have pointed out, any government that comes in must satisfy the legitimate aspirations and needs expressed by the Lebanese people through the urgent implementation of serious reforms.”
“Only by charting a new direction dedicated to reform and fighting corruption will the next government be able to help Lebanon emerge from the current crisis,” he added.
