The Committee on Foreign Relations and Expatriates held a session headed by Representative Yassin Jaber, in which the issue of the demarcation of the maritime border was discussed, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates in the interim government, Charbel Wahba, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense in the interim government Zeina Aker, and for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Gadi Khoury and Councilor Ahmed knew him, and on behalf of the Army Command Brigadier General Roni Fares and Ali Hamdan (Advisor to the President of the Nabih Berri Parliament).
Jaber
After the session, Deputy Jaber said: “The Foreign Relations Committee met today to hear His Excellency the Minister of Defense and His Excellency the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and of course there were assistants from the army and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in the presence of members and some colleagues, representatives, on the issue of the demarcation of the maritime border, which will begin next week. ” The committee considered that what happened in this matter is an achievement for Lebanon because for many years there has always been a kind of non-acceptance of the adoption of a mechanism that Lebanon would accept and on which it had been insisting, namely, that this negotiation is under the auspices of the United Nations, that is, the same framework that has almost been adopted on the ground since the agreement. April and after Israel’s withdrawal in 2000, which is the tripartite military committee at the United Nations headquarters in Naqoura under the auspices of the United Nations. This is the same framework that will almost be adopted, in addition to the issue of maritime demarcation, the presence of an American mediator to help facilitate the matter.
Jaber added: “Of course, previously, I was asking for overseas meetings, direct meetings, etc., of course, the Lebanon stipulation through negotiation, and this is a matter that came up during the visit of the Secretary of State of the United States, Secretary Pompeo to Lebanon in March 2019 at that time, after your meeting with President Berri, you understand the issue. ” During my visit and my representative delegation to Washington in April 2019, on April 12 specifically, we were informed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that what Lebanon requests has been approved through President Berri, which is the United Nations framework. United and its headquarters through the Military Committee.
Jaber continued: “After this development, His Excellency the President sent a letter to the United States of America through Ambassador Elizabeth Richard, and Ambassador Satterfield started arriving in Lebanon, and then of course there was a delay because the Israeli government resigned and there was a disagreement on some details. I believe that today the new phase will benefit Lebanon because he is on his feet. By negotiating from a position of strength, from 2006 to today, 14 years of stability have been celebrated in the south of Lebanon, because today there is a balance of terror between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy. We hope that these indirect negotiations and the negotiations taking place under the auspices of the United Nations will progress in the way that Lebanon regains its full rights.
As we all know, oil and gas extraction must stabilize. If there is stability, both Lebanon and the Israeli enemy need it, so that companies can operate safely and peacefully. And, God willing, we can achieve what we want by getting all of our rights through what our experts in the Lebanese military will build. They have very encouraging data and have been able, in recent years, to advance in the team they have and in the experience. According to what we heard from His Excellency the Minister and the Dean accompanying him, today there is new data that helps Lebanon to clarify its right and, God willing, demarcation preserves Lebanon’s right. This session was useful to inform colleagues, deputies and the public opinion about what is being achieved in the next stage. ”
