The European Union condemned China’s amendments to Hong Kong’s electoral system and threatened to take additional action against Beijing for violating the “one country, two systems” principle, which it promised to implement.
“The decision taken today by China constitutes a new violation of the principle of” one country, two systems “, said the Commissioner for Security and Foreign Policy of the European Union, Josep Borrell, in a statement issued on behalf of the 27 member states of the Union, adding that the European Union will consider taking additional action against China.
Borrell stressed in his statement that this decision “will have a great impact on democratic responsibility and political pluralism in Hong Kong.”
In the statement, he called on “the Chinese and Hong Kong authorities to restore confidence in the democratic process in Hong Kong and stop persecuting those who adhere to democratic values.”
“The European Union will consider additional measures and pay greater attention to the situation in Hong Kong in the context of the extensive relations between the European Union and China,” Borrell said.
The European backlash came following the approval by the Chinese parliament of amendments to the electoral system in Hong Kong, which gave Beijing the power to prevent opposition candidates from running for legislative elections in the autonomous city.
