In the context of the “Dublin procedure”, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced on Wednesday that the Commission wants to “abolish the Dublin procedure”, which holds the first country that enters a migrant responsible for their request of asylum.
“I can announce that we will abolish the Dublin procedure and replace it with a new European immigration management system,” von der Leyen said during a debate that followed his presentation of the State of the Union address. There will be a new and solid solidarity mechanism ”.
He added that the new system “will have common structures on asylum and return.”
His plan will need the approval of the member states of the European Union, which are deeply divided on this sensitive issue.
The Dublin procedure was approved in 1990 and amended twice, the last in 2013.
Under these laws aimed at preventing migrants from making multiple asylum applications in Europe, the member state that receives the asylum application must process it and the potential refugee must not proceed.
The Commission plans to present the long-awaited and repeatedly postponed reform of European immigration policy on 23 September.
The controversial file was raised again after the fire that devastated the Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos last week.
