The European Summit in Paris: What is a strategy to face the threat of terrorism and extremism?

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that European countries “need a quick and coordinated response” to face the terrorist threat, following a European mini-video summit with many European Union leaders following the attacks on France and Austria.

The French president considered that this response should include, in particular, “developing common databases, exchanging information and strengthening punitive policies”, as well as “fully and strictly implementing the set of measures” previously taken by Europe.

This summit comes a week after a terrorist attack in Vienna, after the bloody attack that targeted the church of Notre Dame in Nice in southeastern France, and then after the horrific terrorist act of beheading French teacher Samuel Patty, in France last October.

What are the objectives of the European summit? What are the basic steps that Europeans must take to defeat terrorism?
