Scientists at Harvard University have discovered a strong link between air pollution and an increased risk of neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other fatal dementias.

The Lancet Planetary Health reports that researchers studied data on American patients who had fallen asleep in hospitals due to neurological disorders during the years 2006-2017 and compared them with estimates of PM2.5 minutes in the air in their areas of residence, taking into account collateral factors such as their social status and their economic status. .

The researchers found that for every five micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter, the probability of hospitalization increased by 13% due to Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementia diseases.

This risk remained high even below the level of PM2.5, which, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, equates to 12 micrograms per cubic meter or less per year.

The researchers found that the highest risk of hospitalization due to Parkinson’s disease among the elderly is found in the northeastern regions of the United States, while Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are more common among the elderly in the regions central-western.
