Syrian businessman Muhammad Makhlouf, uncle of President Bashar al-Assad and father of prominent businessman Rami Makhlouf, died this Saturday in Damascus after being infected with the new Corona virus, two sources close to the family confirmed to AFP.

The two sources said that Muhammad Makhlouf, who is 88 years old, brother of Anisa Makhlouf, the mother of the current president, who was one of the pillars of the late President Hafez al-Assad’s regime, “died as a result of his infection with Covid- 19 “.

His grandson, Mohamed Makhlouf, mourned him through his Instagram account.

And local Syrian media reported that Makhlouf entered Al-Assad University Hospital in Damascus on August 23, due to health complications due to the new Corona virus, and died on Saturday as a result of his deteriorating health condition.

Makhlouf’s role in the country increased in the 1970s and 1980s, and he assumed various positions. The tobacco establishments and the real estate bank were the most prominent managers of the late businessman who, successively, took over the management of other institutions.

Makhlouf hails from the city of Bustan Al-Basha in the countryside of the city of Jableh, which is affiliated with the Latakia governorate in western Syria.
