The Israeli channel “N12” said that several Israeli tourists who traveled to Dubai for the New Year holidays have introduced hashish and marijuana into the Gulf country, which has strict restrictions on narcotic substances, according to the “Jerusalem Post”.
The Israeli daily noted that about 8,000 Israelis came to Dubai to celebrate the New Year in the emirate, which is famous for hosting the biggest fireworks on this occasion.
The newspaper stated that the Israelis who went to celebrate the entry of the new year in Dubai, killed two birds with one stone while moving away from the closure that Israel is experiencing for the third time since the beginning of the epidemic, in addition to enjoying the celebrations that the Gulf emirate.
According to information reported by the newspaper, Israeli youth were unaware of the strict laws and severe penalties imposed by the United Arab Emirates on people involved in drug possession.
Under UAE law, drug possession and smuggling can lead to 20 years in prison and the penalty can also lead to death.
An Israeli told N12 that he introduced a small amount of hashish and marijuana to use during the celebrations, adding: “It’s a few grams of soft drugs.”
He added: “I don’t think we’ll get into trouble. We just smoke in our hotel room,” while another Israeli said he did not know the seriousness of the problem and noted that he celebrated in his hotel room.
In the middle of last month, Israeli Tourism Minister Orit Farkash HaCohen said that at least 50,000 Israeli tourists have visited the United Arab Emirates since the signing of the Abrahamic Treaty, noting that they celebrated the Jewish Festival of Lights (Hanukkah ) in the Emirates.
