Lebanese President Michel Aoun stressed, this Thursday, the need to hold those responsible for the recent fire that broke out in the port of Beirut responsible, without ruling out the hypothesis of sabotage.

Aoun’s remarks came at the beginning of the Supreme Defense Council session at the Baabda Presidential Palace, east of Beirut. Talk about the evolution of the fire that broke out in the port of Beirut on Thursday and transmit it to the presidential account through Twitter.

Aoun said: “Today’s fire can be an intentional act of sabotage, or the result of technical error, ignorance or negligence, and in all cases the cause must be known as soon as possible and the perpetrators held accountable.”

He pointed out that “work today should focus on studying effective measures so that what happened does not happen again.”

Aoun said: “It is no longer acceptable to make mistakes of any kind that lead to such a fire, especially after the disaster caused by the first fire.”

Today, the Lebanese Army Military Police launched an investigation into the new fire that broke out in the port of Beirut.

The interim government’s Minister of Works, Michel Najjar, announced that the Beirut port fire was due to repair work and an investigation into its circumstances will be opened.

No casualties from the fire were reported until 16:20 (GMT).

On August 4, the Lebanese capital spent a bloody night, as a result of a large explosion in the port of Beirut, which left 192 dead, more than 6 thousand injured and dozens missing, in addition to massive material damage and losses of about 15 $ 1 billion, according to an unlimited official estimate.

According to preliminary official estimates, the terminal explosion occurred due to some 2,750 tonnes of “ammonium nitrate”, which has been confiscated and stored since 2014.
