The Spanish police announced that they have arrested John McAfee, creator of the antivirus program that bears his name, and who is pursuing the United States for tax evasion.

Police told Agence France-Presse that Spanish security forces arrested the 75-year-old American on Saturday at Barcelona airport, “northeast”, as he was about to board a plane bound for Istanbul.

He is in preventive detention near Barcelona awaiting deportation to the United States.

The announcement of his arrest comes a day after a United States attorney general published an indictment against John McAfee alleging that he failed to report millions of dollars in income he earned from virtual currencies, consulting and conference services, as well as the sums that paid in exchange for granting him the right to complete a documentary about his life.

This accusation, dated June 2020, which was revealed on Monday, confirms that McAfee breached its tax obligations between 2014 and 2018 and transferred its income to bank accounts and virtual currencies in the name of third parties for the purpose of tax evasion.

The businessman also faces charges for concealing property, especially real estate, a yacht and a car, by registering them in the name of other people.

US authorities issued an arrest warrant through Interpol and requested his extradition, according to Spanish police.
