Zam’s execution sparked international outrage as a violation of the country’s freedom of expression.
In a statement, the German Foreign Ministry expressed its dismay at the circumstances in which the death sentence was handed down against Ruhollah Zam, especially as he was detained outside Iran and forcibly transferred to the country.
The ministry offered its condolences to the journalist’s family and friends, highlighting the firmness of the German position that the death penalty is “a violent and inhuman punishment unacceptable under any circumstances.”
The German Foreign Ministry called on the Iranian authorities to respect its citizens’ right to freedom of expression, release all political prisoners and refrain from issuing or implementing new death sentences.
The journalist, who was working on covering opposition demonstrations in Iran in 2017-2018, was sentenced to death for “engaging in anti-revolutionary activities and colluding with French, US and Israeli intelligence services.”
Last Tuesday, the Iranian Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence handed down against Zam, detained in 2019 after years in exile.
