The special assistant to the president of the Iranian Shura Council, Hussein Amir Abd al-Lahian, said on Monday that Iran “strongly defends the security of Syria”, noting that there is a “missing link” related to negotiations to end the the Syrian crisis.
Abd al-Lahyan added, during his meeting with the UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, that Iran welcomes the efforts of the United Nations to resolve the Syrian crisis, which are helping to preserve its territorial integrity, national sovereignty and the return of safety to their lands.
According to the Iranian news agency “Fars”, Abd al-Lahyan referred to a “missing link” in the circumstances in which the dialogue on Syria is taking place, which is a “lack of confidence”. Not long ago, the leader of a terrorist movement, bearing arms and carrying out terrorist acts, and now dressed in a suit and tie, insists on being invited as a party to the negotiations, ”he said, referring to the Syrian opposition.
Amir Abd al-Lahian considered that some dangerous “terrorist groups” are trying to change their name permanently to get off the United Nations terrorism blacklist.
He said that all parties in Syria are responsible for the work of the Constitutional Committee and must take responsibility, asking “not to regard the Syrian government as negligent, because this contradicts the policy of neutrality that must be followed.” He called for urgent measures to be taken to eliminate the inhumane embargo applied to Syria, especially to the medicine, medical equipment and food sector, calling this ban “unfair.”
For his part, Pedersen said the political process in Syria is going relatively well, but the atmosphere of mistrust between the parties is hampering it, according to the Iranian Parliament’s Khaneh Mellat Agency.
The UN envoy stated that he is “fully aware of the situation in the region”, adding: “We will continue our tireless efforts to help Syria recover from the crisis,” considering that “the political process in Syria is going relatively well, but the atmosphere of mistrust between the various parties in Syria still prevents their advance. “
Pedersen said: “We need the help of all parties, parties, neighboring countries and international organizations to get out of the impasse of the lack of progress of the political process in Syria,” adding: “Unfortunately, the economic situation of the Syrian people is getting worse day a day”.
