Tunisian authorities announced on Monday that they had arrested seven people during the investigation into the killing of a member of the National Guard in a “terrorist” attack on Sunday.
“A security patrol made up of two National Guard agents was attacked with a knife by a terrorist in the center of the city of Susa,” 140 kilometers south of the capital Tunis, Hossam El Din El Gabbeli told AFP, spokesman for the National Guard.
He added: “One of them died and the second was injured in hospital.”
Interior Ministry spokesman Khaled al-Hayouni told AFP that the latter was “in stable condition”.
Al-Jabbali said the security forces pursued the attackers who seized the patrol and the weapons of the two victims, noting that “three terrorists were killed in an exchange of gunfire.” Security forces recovered the vehicle and the weapons.
He indicated during an interview with “Shams FM” radio this Monday that “so far 43 suspects related to the terrorist operation have been heard. Seven people have been arrested, including the wife of a terrorist” and two brothers.
Al-Jabbali added that regarding the two brothers, “the security data showed that they were in contact with foreign sites and received training on how to stab and poison.”
This new attack on the police in the city where one of the bloody attacks that shook the country in 2015 took place came three days after the new government took power due to political tension in Tunisia.
