The head of the Lebanese Gas Station Owners Union, Sami Al-Baraks, issued the following statement:

The fuels sector has been going through a brief period of gasoline and diesel shortages due to several factors, the most important of which is the decrease in imported quantities due to the Banque du Liban’s strict restrictions on opening credits. banks as a consequence of the depletion of the Central Bank’s reserves in US dollars and its impact on all imports from Lebanon. What the gas stations in Lebanon suffer today is a consequence of these things.

For this reason, the Union asks the Banque du Liban and the officials, if the elimination of the subsidy is approved, that this be done gradually so that all workers in the sector can absorb it and adapt to this situation of the Lebanese consumer.
Today, after the contacts made by the Union with all the officials, we hope that the promises will be fulfilled and the delivery of gasoline will begin in the next few hours from the Zahrani facilities, where a ship carrying approximately 40 million of liters, which will help pump additional quantities to the local market and forward gasoline to the quantity of A large number of stations have closed. Here, we call on the security and military agencies to take all necessary measures to prevent this material from leaving Lebanese territory, to protect the Lebanese consumer’s right to it, and to preserve the remaining dollars with the Central Bank. We salute the efforts of His Excellency the Minister of Energy and Water, Engineer Raymond Ghajar, who worked to find solutions to this situation from outside Lebanon in coordination with the Director General of Petroleum, Ms. Auror Feghali.
We also demand the formation of a committee to study a mechanism for the removal of subsidies in the event that it is finally approved, among the ministries of energy and economy, the central bank, a group of importing companies and the union of gas station owners to prepare society for that, because things will change drastically. This committee, for example, but not limited to, should now study how to negotiate between importing companies and banks with regard to obtaining the dollar for credits, as well as how to negotiate between stations and companies and with the two concerned ministries, from the pricing schedule to fees and commissions, and many other matters that will change completely.
