Security sources and the National Media Agency in Lebanon said that more than 60 prisoners escaped from a Lebanese prison on Saturday (November 21, 2020), and that five of them were killed when their car collided with a tree while pursuing them. The agency added that inmates escaped from Baabda prison early today after breaking down cell doors, adding that security forces cordoned off surrounding areas.

Security forces told Reuters that some 69 prisoners escaped. He added that five of the prisoners died after a seized car collided with a tree, while the National News Agency reported that authorities had opened an investigation into the escape.

Security forces were able to re-arrest 15 fugitive prisoners, while another four surrendered.

In April Amnesty International said that riots broke out inside Lebanese prisons and that the families of the prisoners had organized sit-ins to demand the release of their relatives due to fear of the spread of Covid-19 in overcrowded prisons.

The organization added that while the Lebanese government has taken various measures, including the release of some prisoners, the authorities should prioritize the release of prisoners who have served their sentences and expedite the review of detainee cases before their trial.

According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University of America, the number of Corona cases in Lebanon is approaching 114,000, including about 884 deaths. There are warnings of an explosion in the health situation.

Lebanon is facing the worst economic crisis since the civil war (1975-1990) and high rates of poverty and unemployment. Almost a year ago, the country witnessed the launch of a widespread movement against corruption and sectarian quotas, but Corona greatly weakened the exit from the demonstrations.
