Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov considered that the military confrontation between the Syrian government and the opposition in the country is over, noting that there are only two hotspots in Syria, namely Idlib and east of the Euphrates.
Lavrov said, in an interview with the Al-Arabiya channel, the text of which was published on the official website of the Russian Foreign Ministry, on Monday: “I recently returned from Damascus, which I visited with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov, who held conversations about the prospects for economic cooperation, while discussing political situations with colleagues “.
He added: “I do not believe that those who have spoken with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other state officials can say that the government of the Syrian Arab Republic is based solely on a military solution to the conflict. This is not true. Military confrontation between the country’s government and the opposition has ended. “
Russia’s foreign minister stressed that only two hotspots remained in Syria, namely the Idlib region and the lands east of the Euphrates.
He explained that “the lands of Idlib are under the control of the Al-Sham Liberation Headquarters (the new front of the Al-Nusra Front), but this area is shrinking. On the basis of the Russian-Turkish memorandum, our colleagues Turks continue to fight the terrorists and separate the moderate opposition from them. Hostilities between the Syrian government and the opposition. “
He continued: “The second access point is the east side of the Euphrates River, where US military personnel operating in the area illegally joined the separatist forces and are playing with the Kurds irresponsibly.”
Lavrov stressed that the US military “brought US oil companies to the region and began pumping oil for its own purposes without respecting Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as stipulated in UN Security Council Resolution 2254.”
Foreign Minister Lavrov: There is no need to launch an attack on Idlib, and the Russian-Turkish patrols will resume when the situation calms down.
In a related context, Lavrov said, in response to a question about fears of a joint attack by Syrian and Russian forces in Idlib: “There is a Russian-Turkish memorandum that is still fully implemented, and patrols on the M- 4 have been arrested for security reasons, because the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham organization always carries out armed provocations and attacks the positions of the Syrian government forces, and also tries to attack the Russian air base in Hmeimim. “
He added: “Our Turkish colleagues affirmed their commitment to fight terrorism and separate the real opponents who are ready for negotiations with the government from the terrorists. There is no need for the Syrian army and its allies to launch any attacks in Idlib. It is only necessary to target the terrorist sites and eliminate their only remaining outpost on Syrian territory. “
Lavrov clarified that the main responsibility in this matter lies, according to the memorandum, on the Turkish side, noting that: “The fight against terrorism is task number one.”
And the Russian Foreign Minister added: “I would like to emphasize that the joint patrols on the M-4 highway will continue as soon as the situation calms down.”
Lavrov also stressed that neither Russia nor the Syrian government are currently conducting military operations in Idlib, stating: “We use force only when protecting against HTS attacks.”
