US Undersecretary of State for Near East Affairs David Schenker told reporters by telephone during a briefing that talks between “Israel” and Lebanon will begin in Naqoura on October 14.

Schenker explained that the UN representative in Lebanon, Jan Kubisch, will host the talks and I will personally attend them, adding that these talks have nothing to do with normalization with “Israel” and will focus solely on charting maritime borders.

He also noted that Lebanon is going through a financial crisis and will benefit from using its natural resources to solve its financial problems, and “I don’t know why we got Lebanon’s approval at this time.”

In addition, he said: “We do not speak with Hezbollah and, to the best of my knowledge and belief, the Lebanese Presidential office will lead the talks.”

Hours earlier, the speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri, said that a framework agreement had been reached that paves the way for the Lebanese negotiator to demarcate the land and sea borders between Lebanon and occupied Palestine.

“The recent visit of the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to Lebanon in 2019 put the file of the southern borders back on the table,” he said today at a press conference.

The President of the Council noted that a framework agreement had been reached describing the Lebanese negotiator, who will be assumed by the Lebanese army under the auspices of the President of the Republic and the government, indicating that the United States is aware that the governments of Lebanon and “Israel” are ready to demarcate the borders based on the experience of the tripartite mechanism of the April Understanding.
