The representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations institutions in Vienna, Prince Abdullah bin Khalid bin Sultan Al Saud, expressed the Kingdom’s conviction of the need to expand the nuclear agreement with Iran.
Prince Abdullah indicated in an interview with the US network “CNN” on Friday that Saudi Arabia had cautiously supported the agreement between Tehran and the 5 + 1 group in 2015, and found many flaws.
He continued: “We are convinced of the need to reach a new comprehensive agreement that includes regional actors and addresses Iran’s ballistic missile program and terrorist financing, and these issues are very important.”
The prince indicated that Saudi Arabia is looking for something to prevent Iran from continuing to develop its ballistic missile program and finance armed militias and proxy forces in the region, while halting its regional activities.
The Saudi diplomat accused senior Iranian officials of blackmailing the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency with threats to abandon Tehran’s obligations under the nuclear deal.
The official expressed Saudi Arabia’s hope that there will be enough support within the United States Congress to ensure that any new negotiations with Iran are broader than it was previously, and said: “The entire international community should take this issue on. “Seriously. Of course we have higher risks in the region,” he said. Iran has shown itself not to be new with confidence. “
He stressed that the Tehran government used the financial gains it had made from the nuclear deal to “fuel unrest in the region” rather than for the welfare of the Iranian people.
He continued: “These issues are very worrying and pave the way for their possession of nuclear weapons. We must stop here and ask: How long will we continue to give Iran the benefit of the doubt?”
