The commander of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces, Lieutenant General Sergey Karakayev, announced that the ICBM “Sarmat” will enter combat service in 2022.

In a statement to the “Red Star” newspaper of the Russian Defense Ministry, the general indicated that the establishments of the Russian defense industries continue to prepare “Sarmat” systems for test flights.

Last February, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko announced that the delivery of “Sarmat” missiles to the Russian armed forces would begin in 2021.

The missile “Sarmat” or “RS-28” is reported to replace the “Vojvoda” (“Satan” or “RS-20” according to NATO classification). Design work for the new missile began in 2011 and the first phase of its test launch was completed at the Plesetsk space airport in northern Russia.

The new missile will be able to hit targets at the north and south poles equally, and will be able to penetrate any missile defense system. Its range is 18,000 km, its launch weight is 208.1 tons, and the missile is 35.5 meters long and 3 meters in diameter. The missile carries divided warheads with a special targeting system for each of them.
