Moscow has commented on Western statements that tried to exploit the health issue of opponent Alexei Navalny, after Germany said he was poisoned with “Novichok” nerve gas and it was developed in Russia.
Navalny, who is among the staunchest critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin, suffered a health setback while traveling last month and was treated at a hospital in Siberia before being evacuated to Berlin.
In this context, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that for several years, “specialists from many Western countries and the specialized agencies of NATO have resorted to the use of this wide range of chemical compounds.”
In the United States, more than 150 patents have been granted to designers of technologies for use for military purposes, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had indicated on Friday that “NATO” countries urged Russia to cooperate fully with an impartial investigation led by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons into the Navalny poisoning.
He described the case as an “attack on basic democratic rights” and said NATO members will continue to consult on the incident and “consider its implications.”
In turn, Alexander Sabaev, a chief toxicologist from the Omsk region, where Navalny was treated, revealed that his body did not react to any toxins, which means there is no poison at all.
