Sources confirmed to “Al-Akhbar” that the Lebanese Foreign Ministry informed the Palestinian ambassador to Lebanon, Ashraf Dabour, the day before the visit, “the inability of Lebanon to receive Haniyeh, due to the tragedy in the port and the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron in Beirut “. Dabur relayed the message to the “Hamas” leadership, which proceeded to cancel previously scheduled appointments, including with the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri. However, the latter opposed the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and took a decisive position with the Hezbollah leadership, especially since the reason for Haniyeh’s visit to Beirut was to participate in the national meeting of “the secretaries general of the Palestinian factions “and” respond “to an invitation that Berri made since 2015 to the leaders of the factions in pursuit of a reconciliation contract between the” Fatah “and” Hamas “movements. Sources said Berri “considered that the refusal to attend Haniyeh was directed at him, especially since he was the godfather of Palestinian reconciliation, and he sponsored and supported the establishment of the temporary leadership framework for the PLO.” Berri and Hezbollah’s objection led to the withdrawal of the Foreign Ministry, so Haniyeh was visiting Beirut for a week, during which he would meet with Lebanese leaders. He met yesterday with the president of the council in a “friendly session”, according to one of the attendees. “Berri expressed his willingness to provide the support the factions need to achieve unity.” Haniyeh also met with the head of the provisional government, Hassan Diab, and Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah is scheduled to visit him at a meeting that is the second between them (the first time 27 years ago when Haniyeh traveled with the martyr Abdel Aziz Al-Rantisi to the Lebanese leaders). The “Abu Al-Abed” visits will include the Ain Al-Hilweh camp in Sidon and the Marj Al-Zuhour area, where he stayed for about a year, excluded in 1992.
The meeting of the general secretaries of the factions was 15 years late, as Khalil al-Hayya, a member of the Hamas political bureau, said; Since it is “part of the Hamas-Fatah agreement in Cairo in 2005 to politically fix the Palestinian house.” Today’s meeting is part of a process that began after the announcement of the “deal of the century” and the annexation plan for the West Bank, and after regional events forced the factions to meet, especially to elude the Arab regimes of the Palestinian Authority and normalizing them with the enemy would lead to the end of the political life of the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, as he understands. “Abu Mazen» that the UAE wants a role for them in the Palestinian question at their expense. , and in the interests of the ousted leader of the Fatah movement, Muhammad Dahlan, who, according to Israeli sources, Abu Dhabi, Washington and Tel Aviv plan to bring him to power, succeeding Abbas as a reward for his “efforts” to achieve the normalization agreement between him. occupying state and the Emirates.
Abbas, who feels the danger of ending it politically, with the availability of an alternative supported by Israel and the United Arab Emirates, is seeking a series of steps to confront this scheme, the first of which is to renew his legitimacy internally by bringing the parties together. Palestinian factions, including “Hamas” and “Islamic Jihad” around him, which may push him to submit. Concessions to “Hamas”, such as the lifting of economic sanctions it imposed at the end of 2017, which negatively affected the economic situation.
Despite Abbas’s fear of Dahlan’s attempt to return to the Palestinian arena from the Gaza gate, and with the power of the Emiratis’ money to improve the economic reality, all indications inside and outside the Strip assured Abu Mazen that “Hamas” would not allow Dahlan to take Gaza as a platform to return to political life.
