The resigned Lebanese MPs called for early elections in Lebanon and stressed that the initiative of the Maronite Patriarch Bechara Al-Rai calling for neutrality is the salvation of Lebanon.
Former MPs Paula Yacoubian, Michel Moawad, Neemat Avram, Henry Helou, Sami Gemayel, Nadim El Gemayel and Elias Hanash responded to Patriarch Al-Rai’s invitation to meet him yesterday. Moawad asked the rest of the deputies to “resign to restore Lebanon from the system that had ruined it”, while Avram said that the discussion with the Patriarch was “on the road map to Lebanon”, calling for early parliamentary elections. He noted that a discussion was held with the sponsor on this issue, refraining from conveying his position, which will develop and emerge in the near future, he said.
For his part, Yacoubian said: “We ask the Patriarch to continue with his positions to delegitimize this ruling clique and support his people who cannot continue in these circumstances.” And he said: “Shaking the structure of the mafia starts with the parliament,” noting that the patriarch “will dedicate all his relationships to building a different Lebanon, because people want a different approach and approach.” He stressed that “anyone with a national conscience must resign from parliament and not give to the corruption cartel.”
And while he pointed to the sponsor’s claim that “things cannot continue after the Beirut bombing as they were before,” he stressed, “no one focuses only on illegal weapons as corruption is also a type of occupation.”
He criticized those who see themselves as opponents in Parliament and the government, saying: “They share agreements and say they are in the opposition from within.”
Hankash voiced the same position, calling on MPs to resign, adding: “We have become morally independent after the attack due to our inability to change, and this is more honorable than being false witnesses.” On hindering the formation of the government, he said: “The French initiative was met with intransigence, and if the knot was resolved on the table, there would be a second knot, because our destiny is linked to important countries like Iran and America.”
“The solution begins with the initiative of the Patriarch that neutrality is the salvation of Lebanon,” Hanakish emphasized, adding that “the next stage will be difficult and it is necessary for each official to feel their responsibility,” calling for early parliamentary elections.
