Reporters Without Borders’ annual report showed that the number of journalists in detention around the world reached 387 at the end of this year. The figure did not change from last year, despite the increase in arrests (389 journalists detained), with China being the country with the highest number of journalists detained (117), followed by Saudi Arabia (34), Egypt (30), Vietnam ( 28) and Syria. (27). The international organization noted that the number of journalists arrested in the world remains at a record level. For his part, the organization’s secretary general, Christophe Delaware, confirmed that the women who are increasing in number in the profession are not immune from arrests either. The report notes that the number of women journalists deprived of their liberty stands at 42 today, compared to 31 last year, an increase of 35%. Notably, the arrests that occurred while journalists were covering the Corona crisis, and the number of these reached 14, including 7 arrested in China. The organization said that “no fewer than 54 journalists are being held hostage” currently in Syria, Yemen and Iraq, a 5% decrease from last year. The non-governmental organization noted the disappearance of four journalists in 2020 from the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America regions.
