A judicial source told the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the judicial investigator in the Beirut port explosion case, Tariq Al-Bitar, is known to be very daring, apolitical, non-partisan and possesses knowledge, experience and independence that would reassure those affected by the port explosion.

The Lebanese authorities quickly appointed Judge Tariq Al-Bitar as a judicial investigator to follow up the investigations into the Beirut port explosion. This came in an effort to contain the political controversy and public pressure following the removal of Judge Fadi Sawan.

Those who know Al-Bitar say that he received very important files during his judicial career, investigated them and made bold decisions. A judicial source told Asharq Al-Awsat that Al-Bitar is “known to be very bold, apolitical, non-partisan and possesses knowledge, experience and independence that would reassure those affected by the port explosion.”

The relatives of the victims view the progress of the investigations with anticipation and caution, since they do not want to return after more than six months (since the explosion of August 4) to zero, as their spokesman Ibrahim Hoteit said, and Demand that no one be neutralized, including the “bigheads” if it is clear who is responsible, and that no attention is paid to political or sectarian calculations.

The former attorney general of cassation, judge Hatem Madi, explained to Asharq Al-Awsat that the new investigating judge is supposed to start from where his predecessor arrived with full right to return to certain procedures that he believes should have been carried out. Madi did not rule out that the new judicial investigator encounters obstacles that may hinder his work and said: “Every judicial investigator receives a sensitive file that is exposed to certain pressures and must be professional and professional.”

He indicated that we should not be optimistic or pessimistic about the time that the new judge’s investigations will take, since that depends on the action plan that he draws up after reviewing the file. In Madi’s view, it is absolutely necessary that the investigator dedicate himself to the file completely, not partially.
