The semi-official Fars news agency reported Saturday that protesters attacked a coastguard center in southern Iran after a force patrol shot and killed a fuel smuggler.
The agency said the attack took place on Friday when Coast Guard patrols fired at ships carrying fuel smuggled to neighboring countries, killing at least one smuggler.
The agency did not specify the identity of the dead man, but said it was a 31-year-old man who was aboard one of the ships that allegedly smuggled fuel.
He quoted General Hussain Dahki, a Coast Guard commander in southern Hormozgan province, as saying that an unspecified number of people subsequently attacked the Coast Guard center in the Kohstak region.
It added that several members of the Coast Guard personnel were injured, confirming that the crowd caused damage to cars, boats and equipment.

In the same context, Dahki said calm had returned to the area, some 1,120 kilometers south of the capital Tehran, on Friday night.
The riots came nearly two weeks after at least three suspected fuel smugglers were killed in clashes in the neighboring provinces of Sistan and Baluchistan. At that moment, a mob attacked the local governor’s office in the city of Saravan, near the border with Pakistan. This region is one of the least developed regions of Iran.
In another context, Dahki said the Coast Guard has seized more than 10 million liters (2.6 million gallons) of fuel from smugglers over the past 11 months, according to Al-Arabiya.
