Pope: Lebanon faces grave danger and we cannot leave it

In his first public meeting with the faithful six months ago yesterday, Pope Francis considered that Lebanon faces “a grave danger that threatens the existence of this country” after the massive explosion in the port of Beirut last month. During the meeting, which was limited to a specific number of people, he said: “We cannot leave Lebanon in its isolation.” Holding the Lebanese flag that a young priest brought to the meeting, the Pope said: “One month after the tragedy … my mind still turns to beloved Lebanon and its suffering inhabitants.” He called on believers around the world to an international day of prayer and fasting for Lebanon on Friday, announcing his determination. That day, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, sent a representative to Lebanon.
“Given the repeated tragedies that all the inhabitants of this land know, we are aware of the grave danger that threatens the existence of this country,” he said in an appeal to the Lebanese people.
The Pope held the first public meeting with the faithful in the open air, where some 500 people gathered and placed masks in the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace of the Vatican and not in St. Peter’s Square.
