Pompeo said that the US administration has always emphasized the importance of US unity, inferring that the US administration is trying to weed out politics from media institutions and not the other way around.
He also stressed that “the most important challenge we face is preserving our freedoms and democracy in the greatest nation the world has ever seen.”
The American minister described the Voice of America as “the spearhead of American freedom” and that the American media “should reflect the values and principles that our parents established to support the freedoms that God granted them.”
Pompeo cited changes made by the US administration to the “Voice of America” website and the parent company “USAGM”, saying that the site used to bring in some employees from China, because they speak Mandarin, but noted that there are US citizens from Chinese origin who dominate the language in the United States.
The minister criticized the method used by some media to try to change and change the official statements, about what he called “false media.”
The enforcement of American freedoms amid Chinese violations
The president of the United States warned against reliance on the ruling Communist Party of China, in response to a question about the promises it made to ensure the security and freedoms of Hong Kong after the National Security Law.
Pompeo said: “The Communist Party of China has promised something to the Hong Kong people, but has broken its promises.”
It also confirmed that US President Donald Trump tried to curb the theft of intellectual property led by the Communist Party of China, in regards to decisions related to banning apps and preventing some Chinese companies from entering the US market.
Pompeo noted that implementing Western freedoms in societies he’s not used to is certainly a challenge, adding that “foreign policy is complicated, but the United States cannot back down from its principles.”
The US secretary said the Trump administration has made efforts to restrict the dictatorial movement in Iran, less than a day after Washington designated the Houthi group in Yemen, which Iran supports, as a terrorist organization.
He added that the next US administration, headed by Joe Biden, “may build on the Abraham accords,” which Israel recently signed with several Arab countries.
