Maysam Rizk wrote in “Al Akhbar”: Before next June, Lebanon will have to resolve the issue of its southern maritime borders. The army proposes in a book led by the amendment of the decree that delimits the limits of the exclusive maritime economic zone, in order to grant Lebanon additional space for the “disputed”, considered rich in gas and oil. There are objections to the proposal, which is now in the custody of the Defense Ministry. What is your destination? Will it overcome the division around it, before the enemy begins, after three months, the exploration of gas in an area that the Lebanese army claims has studies and arguments that prove it belongs to Lebanon?
The Army Command attached this book, of which Al-Akhbar obtained a copy, with a proposed amendment consisting of 4 articles: “First, the southern and southwestern borders of the Lebanese maritime regions are modified according to the coordinate lists The geographic points are shown together and in red on the International Maritime Map issued by the British Admiralty No. 183. Second, the southern and southwestern borders of the Lebanese maritime regions can be revised and their regulations modified as necessary. Third, the Minister of Foreign Affairs is tasked with taking the necessary measures to inform all interested parties, especially the relevant departments of the United Nations, and fourthly, the modification of the text of the decree requires that the waters marinas under the jurisdiction of the Lebanese state will be divided into regions in the form of patches, in proportion to the coordinates modified in the decree.
The army’s legal department prepared the decree proposal and it has been at the Defense Ministry for about two weeks. In the event that there is an agreement to approve the decree, it must be signed by the ministers of works and then the defense before it is signed by Presidents Aoun and Diab.
Public Works Minister Michel Najjar indicated in a call with “Al-Akhbar” that “the amendment decision requires a cabinet meeting.” According to informed sources, Presidents Aoun and Diab tend to agree to modify the decree. As for the Minister of Defense, she sent the file to her legal team for their study, without declaring a decisive position.
Until now, President Nabih Berri has expressed his rejection of the project, and considers that the decree does not reflect a good negotiating position, but rather complicates the matter. He informed the Ministry of Defense and the Army Command of his position.
The President of the Republic was enthusiastic, but stipulated that the decree be based on solid legal arguments, and stated that if the decree were issued it would be sent to the United Nations, and then there is no place to withdraw from these. limits under any circumstances. ” Press here.
