Many Arab refugees who move to the UK face the crisis of dispersal of their families if Britain leaves the European Union and their families are not transferred to them before 31 December.
According to the newspaper “Guardian”, 20 children who are eligible to be reunited with their relatives in the UK are still awaiting the completion of their cases in Greece, at a time when the UK government is preparing to leave the European Union at the end. of this year.
The newspaper said the British Home Office will not extend the deadline to allow children who have applied in Greece to be reunited with their families in the UK.
The non-governmental organization Safe Passage says that some of them are currently homeless and that many cases are delayed in reaching the Greek asylum system on time.
To apply for a family reunification transfer under the “Dublin Law” in the European Union, persons under the age of 18 must apply for asylum in their country of entry, and once this application is processed, their documents are sent to the countries where they want to go. Under Dublin law, a request is made to the UK to accept the transfer in this case.
The Guardian cited the story of a Syrian refugee in the UK, whose son has a sister and a nephew in Greece, who have been stranded to travel to the UK.
The Syrian refugee who spoke to the British newspaper under a pseudonym is Ali, from the Kurdish Afrin region of Syria, which is controlled by Turkish-backed militias.
Ali is very concerned about the safety of his relatives in Greece and the possibility of returning them to Afrin, saying: “The situation there is not only bad, it is very bad. There are many terrorist groups that destroyed our lives like ISIS and Al-Nusra. There is no future, there is no education ”.
“The UK’s exit from the European Union complicates our situation,” exclaims Ali. “We hope that the British government will help all the children who are alone and have a family waiting to be looked after. I have a wonderful and peaceful life here. I want my niece and nephew to be a part of this.”
He pleads: “Please help us.”
After the UK leaves the European Union, limited British family reunification laws will apply. They only allow children to join siblings, aunts or uncles in very limited circumstances, while most of those cases do not meet the standards of British law.
Lawyer Iris Baba said: “We have 15 or 16 year old children with a family in the UK and they have no one in Greece. If the UK stops the family reunification law, they will be trapped here alone and unprotected. ”
They are awaiting the transfer request under the Dublin law of the issuing country, which is Greece in this case, which must submit the requests for these cases before the end of the current year and Britain’s exit from the European Union.
