Pedersen: The conflict in Syria cannot be resolved by constitutional reform alone

The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, said that the conflict in Syria cannot be resolved by constitutional reform or a new constitution alone.

Pederson added during a briefing before the Security Council today that progress in the Constitutional Committee could open the door to a deeper and broader process.

He explained that there is a need to expand cooperation to include all issues, in addition to addressing a series of steps contained in Resolution 2254.

Pedersen said the Constitutional Committee co-chairs should proceed with the agenda in a way that allows all issues to be addressed, without preconditions.

Pederson expressed his belief that the present moment is when one must actively work on what he described as one of his top priorities, which is “addressing the fate of tens of thousands of detained, abducted or missing Syrians,” he said.
