After meeting with Lebanese President Michel Aoun, Patriarch Al-Rahi reveals that he asked the prime minister appointed to form the government, Saad Hariri, to inform him of the reason for the delay in forming it, and indicates that Lebanon cannot remain under a provisional government.
The Maronite Patriarch, Mar Bishara Boutros Al-Rai, said that he is against the campaign against the President of the Republic because honor should not be exposed.
After his meeting with President Aoun at the Baabda Palace on Friday, Al-Rahi noted that in light of the stressful conditions, Lebanon cannot remain under an interim government, revealing that he had asked the prime minister appointed Saad Hariri to inform him of the reason for the delay in composition.
He added: “I would have liked to celebrate the New Year with the existence of a new government because the country can no longer tolerate, and whatever the circumstances, an understanding is necessary between the country’s president and the designated president, according to the constitution and the formation of a government, because it is the door to reform “.
The patriarch added: “The Lebanese people are hungry and devastated, and this is a fundamental reason to form a government because it is an executive authority that must exist. It is not normal for the interim government to continue for so long and the country is paralyzed.”
Prime Minister-designate Hariri presented the formation of a new government on December 9, saying that his meeting with President Aoun took place “in a positive atmosphere” but did not record any break in the wall from the crisis of government formation.
Notably, the current interim government resigned after the Beirut port explosion in August, which killed more than 200 people and injured thousands and destroyed large sections of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
The French chancellor had warned of a “danger that threatens Lebanon” in light of the state of “the Lebanese who deny its reality,” as he said, about a week before President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Beirut, which was postponed after being infected with the coronavirus.
Hariri’s assignment was preceded by the assignment of Mustafa Adeeb, who apologized for his mission in forming the government, while Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said that “there are those who stifled the French initiative in contravention of all established principles “.
Lebanon is experiencing a suffocating economic crisis and a humanitarian crisis that is exacerbated by high prices and the rise of the dollar against the Lebanese pound.
