Atlanta, USA (CNN) – Former US President Barack Obama has said that the election results, with each candidate garnering more than 70 million votes, show that the nation remains deeply divided, which is not a good sign of democracy.
What the results show is that “we are still deeply divided … the power of that alternative worldview that is presented in the media and that these voters are consuming – it carries a lot of weight,” Obama added, in a recorded interview with CBS, broadcast on Sunday.
When asked if he is concerned about this, Obama replied: “Yes. It is very difficult for our democracy to work if we work according to very different sets of facts.”
Obama conducted a series of timely interviews to publish his new memoir, “The Promised Land.”
The 44th president defended his active role in his election campaign to Joe Biden, his former vice president, saying the circumstances were justified because he openly criticized his successor, something that generally does not happen.
On the importance of a peaceful transition, Obama said: “It is a temporary job. We are not above the rules. We are not above the law. This is the essence of our democracy.”
