Zarif challenged Pompeo on Twitter, saying, “I was wrong again, nothing new will happen on September 20. Just check Resolution 2231.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said “nothing will happen” on September 20, which US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo spoke about in reference to the reactivation of sanctions against Tehran on this date.

Zarif’s tweet came after Pompeo confirmed that UN sanctions would automatically be re-imposed on Iran on the aforementioned date, and that the United States would ensure that all countries in the world apply and respect these sanctions.

“I made a mistake again,” Zarif wrote, addressing his American counterpart. “Nothing new will happen on September 20. Just review Resolution 2231.”

On August 20, Pompeo resorted to a controversial measure when he formally notified the UN Security Council that the United States had activated the “return to the old situation” clause (Snapback) stipulated in the Iranian nuclear agreement, which allows the reimposition automatic international sanctions on Tehran after approval. 30 days, that is, sunrise on Sunday, September 20 GMT.

The rest of the members of the UN Security Council disagreed with the United States in this position, since they consider that Washington has lost its right to activate this mechanism when it withdrew from the nuclear agreement in 2018.
