No international aid to Lebanon before the financial forensic audit problem is resolved

On Tuesday, the Lebanese president sent a message to Parliament, in which he indicated that the criminal audit of the accounts of the Central Bank of Lebanon is a necessity to get out of the number of countries that he described as “failed”.

On Friday, the financial auditing firm “Alvarez & Marsal” decided to officially inform Lebanon of its removal from the criminal audit trail of the Central Bank of Lebanon.

The international company justified its decision to withdraw by “not obtaining the required information and documents, and not being sure of reaching this information.”

These data indicate an ambiguity in the disclosure of the accounts and financial statements of the Central Bank of Lebanon, reflecting the concealment of the powerful parties about the rampant corruption in Lebanon for years.

The forensic accounting audit is considered one of the requirements for the State’s negotiation with the International Monetary Fund, and within the conditions that it recently established for the path of economic and financial reform.

On November 3, the head of the interim government at the time, Hassan Diab, asked the central bank to hand over all the documents to the international auditing firm.

Diab considered that any attempt to obstruct the forensic audit is classified as an association responsible for causing the suffering of the Lebanese financially, economically and in life.

For more than a year, Lebanon has suffered a serious economic crisis, the worst since the end of the civil war (1975-1990), which caused a financial collapse, in addition to significant material losses suffered by the Central Bank.

In October 2019, Lebanon witnessed protests against the “corrupt” political class, which led the Saad al-Harir government to resign, and the Diab government replaced it, but conducts business until it is agreed to form an independent government.

The Lebanese called for the resignation of the Diab government following the terrible bomb attack in Beirut, which killed some 200 people, injured more than 6,500, destroyed dozens of buildings and facilities and caused huge economic losses, which exacerbated the suffocating crisis in Lebanon .

The Lebanese street demands a government of independent powers that is not subject to sectarian and partisan quotas, and the mandate Mustafa Adeeb failed about two months ago to form the government and resigned after Hezbollah and its allies faced an interruption. .

Lebanon has been suffering from the influence of Hezbollah and the control of the Ministry of Finance for years, while the international community stipulates to provide support to a government without representation from Hassan Nasrallah’s group.

Western and Gulf countries rank Hezbollah on the list of terrorist organizations, while the Shiite group is exploiting its influence in Lebanon to serve it on their regional agendas.
