With the proximity of hurricane ETA in the Caribbean Sea, Nicaragua has been put on alert and the country’s authorities have intensified prevention preparations in cities and regions on the northeast coast of the country, while the hurricane, which has become a category 2, intensifies (with winds ranging between 154 and 177 km per hour). As announced by the director of the National Institute of Meteorology, Marcio Baca.

More than 80,000 people live in the most threatened areas, according to the regional government.

On Sunday, residents of the Miskitos Islands off the northern Caribbean coast of Negaragua and coastal residents near the border with Honduras were evacuated.

The authorities transferred 88 tons of food and civil defense equipment to the area.

The hurricane is expected to hit the northeast coast of Nicaragua on Tuesday morning, before it diminishes in strength as it collides with mountainous areas, according to weather forecasts.

On Monday morning, strong winds warned of the hurricane approaching from the north coast of Nicaragua, which had been placed on a yellow alert. Authorities fear coastal flooding, with waves of more than two meters in height and wind damage to homes.

“The buildings in this area are not durable,” said the director of the Office for Disaster Prevention, Guillermo González.

Hurricane ETA also put El Salvador and Honduras on alert.

Costa Rica is also preparing for heavy rains that will affect the hurricane area.
