Two senior Lebanese officials told Reuters that Adeeb’s nomination came after calls made by French President Emmanuel Macron over the past 48 hours to pressure Lebanese leaders to agree on a candidate.
A source in the French presidency told Reuters that Macron had contacted the main parties on Saturday and Sunday by phone. “The president was informed of the ongoing negotiations in Beirut,” the source said.
Macron is scheduled to visit Lebanon on Monday to pressure Lebanese leaders on the need for reform.
What do we know about Mustafa Adeeb and his candidacy?
Mustafa Adeeb, 48, has been Lebanon’s ambassador to Germany since 2013.
Adeeb has a doctorate in law and political science, and previously taught at universities in Lebanon and France.
He also worked as an advisor to former Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
A group of former prime ministers, including Saad Hariri, who heads the main Future Party in Lebanon, announced their support for Adeeb after reviewing several names on Sunday.
President Michel Aoun is scheduled to meet with the parliamentary blocs on Monday in the framework of official consultations to appoint the new prime minister. He is obliged to nominate the candidate with the most support among the representatives.
If there were no last minute complications, it appears that the ambassador will be officially appointed in the consultations.
A source told Reuters that Hezbollah and the Amal Movement will call Adeeb in consultations, while Gebran Bassil, head of the Free Patriotic Movement, told Reuters that he would do the same.
However, the head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, announced the appointment of his party, Nawaf Salam, to head the next government in consultations.
Until a new government is agreed, the Diab government will continue to do business.
