Tottenham coach José Mourinho revealed that he cried when Bayern Munich in 2012 pulled the Real Madrid team he was supervising out of the Champions League.
The Portuguese said in an interview with the Spanish newspaper “Marca”, published on Saturday: “Tonight is the only night I cried after a soccer match.”
“I remember it very well, Itur Karanka (his assistant) … We stopped the car in front of my house and wept.”
“It was difficult to accept defeat, especially because in this 2011-2012 season we were the best team in Europe,” said Mourinho.
This weekend marks 8 years since Mourinho ended the command of Barcelona, led by Pep Guardiola, over soccer in Spain by winning the national league title after scoring 100 points, a record.
But Mourinho also had a chance to win what would have been Real Madrid’s tenth title in the Champions League, but he lost the penalty to Bayern Munich in the semifinals, where Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaká and Sergio Ramos squandered his penalty.
“This is also soccer, Cristiano, Kaká and Ramos. They are monsters in soccer. There are no doubts about it, but they are also human beings,” said Mourinho.
Thinking of winning the Spanish league, Mourinho said: “I wanted to win the league titles in England, Italy and Spain … and I am still the only coach who has done so.”
Mourinho won the Italian league with Inter Milan, the English league with Chelsea and the Spanish league that he achieved with Real Madrid.
