Recent data released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in the capital, Rabat, indicated that Morocco has around 12,000 refugees and asylum seekers on its soil from 40 countries around the world.
UNHCR stated that “Morocco is a country of transit and reception, since the number of refugees it receives reaches 7,561, while the number of asylum seekers reaches 4,399 people.”
The list includes refugees from Syria, Yemen, Palestine and Iraq, in addition to several African and other countries.
UNHCR confirmed that the sums destined to finance its operations in Morocco for the year 2020 amount to 8.5 million dollars, and since the beginning of the health crisis caused by “Covid-19”, it has worked with its partners to ensure continuity. on-site and remote services for all refugees.
Regarding educational level, UNHCR stated that thanks to the education support program, 90% of refugee children were enrolled in primary schools during the current year.
UNHCR highlighted that it is working to ensure permanent solutions for some refugees with special needs, since in 2019 it contributed to the resettlement of 102 refugees in other countries, such as Canada, America, Sweden and France.
