The Moroccan embassy in Lebanon distributed a statement on the recognition by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, of Moroccan sovereignty over the entire territory of Western Sahara.

The statement read:

“The United States, as previous administrations have declared, affirms its support for the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the territory of Western Sahara. Therefore, as of today, the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the entire territory of Western Sahara, and renews its affirmation. Their support for a serious, realistic and credible self-government proposal as the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the dispute over the territory of Western Sahara.

The United States believes that the establishment of an independent Saharan state is not a realistic option to resolve the conflict and that true autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only possible solution.

We urge the parties to start talks as soon as possible, adopting Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the only framework to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution.

To facilitate progress toward this goal, the United States will foster economic and social development with Morocco, including in the Western Sahara territories. To this end, the United States will open a consulate in Western Sahara, in Dakhla, in order to promote economic and trade opportunities for the region.

And now, based on that, I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, under the authority of the Constitution and laws of the United States, hereby announce that the United States recognizes that the entire territory Western Sahara is part of the Kingdom of Morocco.

In proof of the above, I placed my signature on this fourth day of December of the year 2020 AD, and the year 245 since the independence of the United States of America.
