These conditions led to an increase in poverty around the world, to register this first increase of its kind in more than 20 years, and in this context the World Bank announced this Wednesday that the Covid-19 pandemic will push from 88 to 115 million people in the world to extreme poverty in 2020, highlighting that the situation will include a growing number of urban residents.

The Washington-based bank said the extreme poverty rate would rise for the first time in more than twenty years. By 2021, this figure could reach 150 million people living on $ 1.90 a day, less than the price of a cup of coffee in a developed country.

“On the other hand, expectations indicate that a growing number of urban dwellers will sink into extreme poverty, while this situation tends to affect people in rural areas,” the bank added.
