Supporters of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan staged a rally in the capital Yerevan amid the continuing deepening of the political crisis, in the context of the war with Azerbaijan last year. At the same time, Pashinyan’s opponents organized an opposition march in another part of the capital, asking him to resign.
Pashinyan faces increasing pressure from the opposition due to its handling of the war in the disputed Nagorno Karabakh region with Azerbaijan, in which Armenia suffered heavy losses and agreed to cede large areas of the region’s territory to Azerbaijan.
Pashinyan said he apologized to his citizens for the mistakes he made after he took power in 2018, and expressed his hope that the country’s President Armin Sarkisian will accept the removal of the Army Chief of General Staff Onik Gasparyan. . for his interference in political affairs, and Sarkisian refused to sign the impeachment on Saturday.
Pashinyan had accused the army last week of attempting a coup, after the General Staff called for his resignation. Pashinyan proposed organizing a constitutional referendum next October, inviting voters to hear their opinion on expanding presidential powers to avoid future crises.
For his part, President Sarkisian called in a statement to all parties to show restraint, saying that the political struggle should not go beyond the law or generate unrest and instability in the country.
